Last week Chris' grandparents were here from NY visiting. They are wonderful people and I am glad to consider them my grandparents (Chris' grandpa is so funny and they are so sweet together).
They had lots of activities and family visits planned and we were lucky to have dinner with them many nights. One night at dinner we were talking about how highway 1 was closed in Big Sur, which led us to talking about Hearst Castle and my parent's house (which is about an hour south of the castle).
Looking at everyone's schedules, we realized that we were all off on Tuesday and decided to make an impromptu trip up to the castle and some of us spent the night at my parent's house.

We left about 8am and the day was absolutely beautiful. Blue skies, green hills from a recent rain, and cows on the side of the road greeted us as we made our way North.
We stopped for lunch in Cambria and enjoyed a wonderful lunch at Linn's. While I didn't get any pie, I did enjoy some Ollalieberry lemonade (the top layer of our wedding cake is Vanilla cake with ollalieberry filling...can't wait to taste that next month!).
The Grandparent's nor Lynn had been to the castle before, so we took tour #1 which gives an overview of the castle and Mr. Hearst's life.

On the tram ride from the visitor's center to the castle has a recording full of info and focal points along the way, narrated by Alex Trebek.

The main house. Could you imagine calling this place home?

The Neptune pool. Beautiful, crystal blue, but cold since it's not heated!

It was a little foggy over the ocean but the view was spectacular anyway! Here is Chris' side of the family.

The indoor Roman pool. It has real gold in the tiles that surround the pool.
After the tour, we headed to my parents' house for a (much needed, for me) visit. Our good friend George was staying the night too and it was wonderful to catch up with him too.
Lynn loves their Pink Champagne cake (we had it at my bridal shower) so she got us one, and we couldn't resist tasting some of the white chocolate curls before dinner!

Unfortunately, Lynn and Elizabeth had to head back home after dinner, but the grandparents, Chris and I spent the night.
Mom made us a wonderful breakfast before we set out to Morro Bay for the morning.

The sun was so bright, I couldn't keep my eyes open and kept crying. I think they were just happy tears because I got to see my family! (Morro Rock in the background)

This is one of our favorite stores and I love how the rock is looming behind the sign.

My flip-flops are covered in paint and this painting was on the wall of the surf shop where I purchased new ones.
Before we left town, we drove out to the rock where a group of sea otters were dining on some fresh seafood.
While it was just a short visit, it was wonderful to show my new family some of where I grew up. I love any amount of time I get with my family and I'm so thankful that the rain held off and gave us a fabulous visit!
