Couple Lets Facebook Poll Decide Their Baby’s Name
When a couple finds out they're having a baby, they usually start coming up with a list of names. Some people ask family and friends, others surf the Internet, some people turn to Hollywood and pop culture for the trendiest names.
One couple is bucking the usual trends by getting their baby name from Facebook. A couple in Illinois decided on the name Cooper for their soon-to-arrive baby boy. However, when their doctor revealed they were actually having a girl, Dave and Lindsey Meske decided to use Facebook to name their baby.
Last fall, the Meskes launched an online poll titled, "Name My Child" in which family, friends, and even strangers could weigh in on a name for the baby. The poll included four names that the couple had narrowed the choices down to: Addilyne, Madelyn, Emily, or McKenna. So why did the couple choose social media to help them with such an important task? Between the two of them, they could not agree on a name. Dave said watching the poll change every day was addicting and that he checked it nonstop. He even compared it to "watching the stock market ticker." So which name won? Madelyn Rae Meske was born January 31. "Madelyn" edged out "Emily" by just 45 votes, receiving 1,310 votes. "McKenna" came in third, and "Addilyne" received the least number of votes.
I love my friends. They often have good suggestions, but letting them have the final decision on the name of our baby? Not so much {but we welcome suggestions!!}.
We've learned that there is a lot of responsibility in choosing the name of one's child! I didn't think that it would be so difficult, but the weight of realization that she will be using this moniker for the rest of her life, until she marries or decides she wants to change it herself that is, is kind of intimidating.
We definitely have our two favorite names. As in, we each have one name that we like best and while the other's choice is still a good name, we still like "our" first choice best.
Fortunately, we have a ways to go until we have to make our final decision, but we are hoping to have it choosen sooner rather than later!
How did you decide on your child's name? Did you both readily agree or was there much discussion and compromise with the final choice?

We made a deal early on that we BOTH have to LOVE the name (not just "like" it). When I was pregnant with Kensie, I was toally set on the name, "Ella May". But, Greg didn't abosultely love it. He said it wasn't a name he could shout from the stands while she was playing volleyball. :) haha, total boy response. It's funny looking back on it now. I don't even really like the name anymore. And I certainly can't imagine Kensie being any other name!
It's good you're starting early! You'll figure it out...good luck!
