The fair is in town!

I absolutely LOVE the California Mid State Fair and all that it has to offer, but with work making it more and more difficult for Chris and I to have more than 36 hours off in a row together, we weren't able to go this year.
But... we DO have our own little fair here in Ventura County!

While our fair might not be as big as the mid state fair, what it lacks in size, it makes up in hometown spirit! (okay, a little over the top I know, but come on, I love the fair!)

The Ventura County fair has 4H animals (although due to it's smaller size, they rotate the animals through on different days) and on Saturday there was sheep, goats, chickens, bunnies, and more, oh my!

I love the feathers on this speckled chicken!

Bunny #1

and... bunny #2 (yes it really is a bunny and not a big dust mite from under our couch!)

This turkey seemed a little big for the cage he (she? it? I have no idea) was in, but it was neat to see the feathers spread out and being shown off. How anyone could look at this thing way back when and decide that it would taste good is beyond me, but I am thankful they did!

This was a baby miniature horse! A mini-Winnie?

These two were working on their beauty sleep before being shown in the ring that afternoon.

This little guy was watching us the entire time we were walking towards him, just begging to be petted.

So, of course, I obliged him! (Chris wasn't so willing though)

One of my favorite things to do at the fair is E.A.T.! We limited ourselves, but we did enjoy one treat...

How could you deny yourself this warm, soft and crunchy at the same time, sweet concoction?
Obviously we didn't and we enjoyed every bite! The strawberries make it healthy, right?

After our funnel cake, we headed over to the garden area where very talented people and businesses create landscapes, and they did an amazing job!

I love this simple pedestal pot filled with bright colors...I may have to replicate this some day!

They had so many beautiful roses with different color combinations.

Chris and I loved these soft looking plants that boarded this small rock wall. I would have named them fire heads, as their tops looked like a lit match, but I'm sure their real name is something that I can't pronounce.

The gem and mineral building was chock full of civil war memorabilia (with costumed docents), a mini rock polishing station, countless collections (Elvis, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Alice in Wonderland, Legos, GI Joe, and so many others!), replicas of military planes, and a large train set!
This isn't a very good picture but there were multiple trains (freight and passenger), a city, tunnel, camping site, fire stations, shipping yard, etc. I could see Chris' mind thinking about where we could build this set-up in our house.

One of the biggest symbols of a fair to me, is the rides! Not that I venture onto one very often, but there is just something about seeing kid's smiling faces as they go around and around on the Ferris wheel, slide down the giant slide, and my personal favorite...the flying swings!

While we didn't go on any rides, Chris did attempt to win some prizes by trying to shoot out the red star on the target with the pellet guns.

While we didn't go home with any large stuffed dogs, or inflatable baseball bats, there is just something heart-warming about seeing my husband trying to win me a prize. Even when he knows that it will just sit in our house for a few weeks/months until it gets shipped off to Goodwill, it still makes my heart flutter.

A fair is not a fair without a booth where you try to win a goldfish by throwing a ping pong ball into a small glass jar full of water! (Nope, we didn't take one of these home either)

My favorite! The flying swings, just put your arms out, turn your face to the sky, and believe that you really are flying!
What are your favorite fair memories? Do you have a favorite booth or exhibit to visit?
